Depiction of Mars in Fictional Works, Part III

This is the third part of a nine part series. In this series, I will discuss how Mars is depicted in various fictional works such as movies, books, and games.

In Part III, I will discuss about the animated television series Futurama. The series takes place in the year 3000, where Mars has been taken over by humans from the Native Martians. The "Where the Buggalo Roam" episode reveals that the Native Martians were forced to live under the "face" of Mars by human colonists. The appearance and culture of the Native Martians is a parody of the Native American Indians. "They even share a similar history of having their land taken from them by unfair methods. For example, when Mr. Wong says that his ancestor bought all of Mars' western Hemisphere for a bead, it is a reference to the time that New York was bought for a bunch of beads worth approximately $24." In the episode, the Martian landscape is depicted as desert-like with an orange to red sky, dust storms, and little vegetations.
