Depiction of Mars in Fictional Works, Part I

This is the first part of a nine part series. In this series, I will discuss how Mars is depicted in various fictional works such as movies, books, and games.

In Part I, I will discuss about a movie starring the Governator (Arnold Schwarzenegger). In the movie Total Recall, the protagonist (Schwarzenegger) had to travel to Mars to discover his past. Director Paul Verhoeven offers "a level of realism not often seen in other SciFi films." The movie gave "a believable depiction of what life on Mars look like," instead of showing Martian aliens carrying ray guns and wearing jet packs. In this depiction of Mars, Martian colonists lived in giant glass and steel domes that look like somewhere "between an urban slum and a seedy mill town--more like the Old West," which gave an impression that Mars is not a nice place to live. This Mars is "a low-tech, low-brow world."

Well, this is one depiction of Mars, more will come soon.
